U-21 progress pleases Di Biagio

Italy Under-21 boss Gigi Di Biagio was left satisfied with the performance of his side in the 3-0 win over Northern Ireland.

“We knew that it was going to be a difficult game,” he stated. “But the boys read the match well. We lack consistency at times, but we were able to up the tempo in the second half and it ended positively.

“We are growing as a side, we are on the right road and we will now go to Serbia convinced of our value as a team.”

The Azzurrini took the lead on Thursday with a Federico Viviani free-kick. Antonio Rozzi and Andrea Belotti then added two late strikes.

“I work on free-kicks every day in order to improve and I’m now gaining the rewards,” Viviani commented.

“Nevertheless, the important thing for us was the three points and we went in search of those from the very beginning.

“We thoroughly deserved the victory,” the Roma player, on loan at Pescara, continued.

“We should have had a penalty, the disallowed goal should have been given and we missed another three or four great opportunities.”
