Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio acknowledged “Serbia played better” after a 1-0 defeat, but still believes in qualification.

The Azzurrini dropped down to third place in Group 9 for the European Under-21 Championship with today’s result.

“We should’ve played better, as we knew what awaited us. We tried to the end, but in a disorganised manner and didn’t get the right passing manoeuvres,” Di Biagio told Rai Sport.

“I certainly couldn’t have asked for more of an effort from my players, as they pushed to the final whistle, but we have to admit Serbia played better.”

Belgium are still top with 13 points from six games, followed by Serbia on 10 from five matches and Italy have nine from five.

“This group was tough from the start and we never kidded ourselves that this was going to be simple. It’s an uphill struggle, but a path we can still take.”

The table as it stands reads:

  P W D L F A GD Pts
Belgium 6 4 1 1 9 4 5 13
Serbia 5 3 1 1 9 6 3 10
Italy 5 3 0 2 7 4 3 9
Cyprus 5 2 0 3 6 7 -1 6
Northern Ireland 5 0 0 5 1 11 -10 0
