Rafa Benitez concedes Napoli “did not play to our usual level” against Parma and gave an injury update on Marek Hamsik.

The 1-0 result at the San Paolo was their second consecutive defeat, following on from the 3-0 loss to Juventus.

“I am disappointed, because we did not play to our usual level. It’s clear that if we don’t play well and our opponents do, then we will struggle,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We lost the ball too easily, allowed too much space on the counter and wasted a few opportunities going forward with Gonzalo Higuain and Goran Pandev.

“I don’t believe Higuain is too isolated, as Pandev was in a more advanced role. The problem was we didn’t pass the ball properly.”

Hamsik came on as a substitute, but was then forced to limp off just nine minutes later. Will he be fit to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League?

“We have to wait and see, as Hamsik was unlucky to suffer a knock in the same spot where he already had a bruise.”

Once again, Napoli faltered after a break for international duty and Benitez warned there is little he can do.

“All the top teams have to deal with international duty and we knew these things could happen. I don’t think the side showed a lack of determination or will to win.

“We have to work harder, but also work well. Naturally when there are two games per week, we don’t have much time, but must analyse what didn’t work and try to improve.”

Napoli’s next Champions League opponents were also beaten at home, as Borussia Dortmund lost 3-0 to Bayern Munich today.

“Against Bayern Munich that can happen. I was not so much concerned with Borussia’s result this weekend as ours.”
