Mario Balotelli was philosophical about the crossbar denying a hat-trick against Livorno. “Next time it will go in.”

The Milan striker netted twice for a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Picchi and was about to win it in the final minute, but his rocket from 30 metres dipped on to the underside of the bar, bounced off the line and back out.

“That’s football. Next time it will go in,” he shrugged on Sky Sport Italia.

“I have always been in good shape and never had any of the problems that were written about. I just wasn’t scoring, that’s all.

“We need to be more careful when our opponents go on the counter-attack, because every time they do we tend to concede.

“We are playing fairly well and are scoring again at last, which was a problem before, so now we just need a little more luck.”

Balotelli has scored in each of his last three games and on Wednesday hosts Ajax in the Champions League.

“Now we have Ajax and it is a game we want to win.”
