Serie A honours Mandela

Former South African leader Nelson Mandela will be remembered ahead of every Serie A game today.

The Lega Serie A decided on Saturday evening to commemorate the passing of the civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner at the age of 95.

Rather than a minute’s silence, each club will put up one of his inspirational quotes on the giant screens in the stadium.

“Sport has the power to change the world,” said Mandela. “It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.

“It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.

“It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.”
