As expected, Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi’s doping ban has been wiped out after he failed a test because of a tumour.

The former Milan, Chievo and Italy player failed a routine test on December 1 following a game against Cagliari.

It later emerged elevated levels of the hormone gonadotropin hGC were down to a relapse of the testicular cancer he had already suffered from in July.

His lawyers lodged an appeal to the Anti-Doping Tribunal which was today accepted, proving the doping test failure was not down to illegal substances.

Acerbi is now undergoing treatment for the testicular cancer.
