Milan have confirmed that Andrea Petagna has returned from Sampdoria, seemingly opening the door for Alessandro Matri to Fiorentina.

The Rossoneri have today released a brief communication to confirm that 18-year-old Petagna has returned from his loan spell at the Luigi Ferraris.

The forward had managed only three Serie A appearances from the bench this term for Samp and was seen as not figuring in Sinisa Mihajlovic’s plans.

The forward had managed only three Serie A appearances from the bench this term for Samp and was seen as not figuring in Sinisa Mihajlovic’s plans.

Having already also appeared for Milan this season, the youngster is unlikely to be loaned out elsewhere, as FIFA regulations prevent players representing more than two clubs in a single season.

Petagna’s expected presence now as reserve to Giampaolo Pazzini and Mario Balotelli in attack in fact is seen as evidence that Alessandro Matri is edging closer to a loan switch to Fiorentina.

La Viola are believed to have reached agreement to take the former Cagliari and Juventus man on a temporary basis until the end of the season, to ease their selection concerns in attack.
