Gian Piero Gasperini wasn’t too downbeat despite seeing Genoa fall to a derby defeat to Sampdoria.

Maxi Lopez’s first-half effort proved the difference in Week 22’s fixture, despite the Grifoni squandering a handful of chances of their own, particularly late on.

“In the first half we played well in certain aspects, we did not use the ball correctly in the first half and wasted a good portion of the game,” Gasperini considered post-match.

“But, we can leave with our heads held high. We were not able to score at a moment when we were pushing in the right way.

“Now? We will bring in the players that arrived in the January market and try to pick up as many points as possible to secure survival as soon as possible.

“At one point here we fielded all of our offensive potential. Whilst there was not the decisive strike despite several balls across the goal, the judgement can only be positive.

“This team will do well. If we had been able to take one of the chances created, then the review would have been different.”
