Former Inter, Parma, Fiorentina and Roma striker Adriano has resumed his career with Atletico Paranaense.

The striker, nicknamed L’Imperatore, was once one of the most promising young players in world football.

He almost retired due to a period of depression and has suffered from this illness and alcoholism for many years.

He joined a series of clubs after terminating his contract with Inter in April 2009, going through short stints at Sao Paulo, Flamengo, Roma, Corinthians and Flamengo again.

Adriano has played only 16 games since June 2010, eight of them for Roma and as many with Corinthians.

Turning 32 on February 17, he has signed a new one-year contract with Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense and will be part of their squad for the Copa Libertadores.

Adriano Leite Ribeiro had been training with the side for a month, but only now put pen to paper.

“I am very happy to have signed and it’s gratifying after so much hard work in training,” he said.

“I have the opportunity to get back to playing football. Obviously I am still missing match fitness, but I will start coming off the bench and hope to earn a regular spot.

“I have found a united and marvellous group of players. I hope to make our fans happy by scoring many goals and helping the team to win the Libertadores.”
