Alessio Cerci feels his performance against Spain was a big step towards a spot with Italy at the World Cup.

The Torino star hit the woodwork in the Azzurri’s best chance as they lost the friendly 1-0 in Madrid.

“It was an important test for me, as I was gambling with many of my chances of going to the World Cup,” he told Rai Sport.

“I am happy with my performance and the kind words of the Coach. It’s just a shame about the result.

“We knew Spain would keep possession and therefore we had to make more of our counter-attacks, as they leave gaps at the back when pushing forward so much.

“It’s a pity the ball hit the post. Our approach was positive against an extremely strong side, so I’d say it was a good performance.

“I can give much more, especially in games like this with the opportunities for counter-attacks. I can certainly do much better.

“I hope to be at the World Cup, there are still 12 Serie A games left and they will also prove decisive.”
