Reports in the media today suggest a new UEFA Nations League international tournament is set to be approved by Europe’s governing body.
The new competition would be played biennially in odd numbered years, during dates otherwise allocated for international friendlies.
It is said that a league format will be used, with promotion and relegation between divisions.
Italy are likely to be placed into the top division alongside the likes of Spain, Germany, England, Portugal and Holland, with the first tournament likely to be schedules for after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
