Toni: 'I'm a World Cup candidate'

Verona hitman Luca Toni assures he has every reason to hope for a World Cup call. “If someone without a goal can hope...”

He won the 2006 World Cup with Italy and scored 16 goals in 47 caps, but hasn’t played for the Nazionale since June 2009.

Toni turns 37 next month and has set a new club record with his 16 goals in a single Serie A season for Verona.

“Do I really hope for a World Cup call? Absolutely I do!” he told Chi magazine.

“In fact, I am putting myself forward as a candidate for a shirt in Brazil. If someone without a goal this season can hope, then of course I will after netting 16 without penalties.”

Toni isn’t alone in thinking that, as he’s included in our very own World Cup Squad Selector. Give us your opinion!
