Torino are wearing special jerseys today to mark the anniversary of the Superga tragedy, which killed the Grande Torino team.
The message on the shirt worn against Chievo this afternoon reads: ‘Only fate defeated them.’
The squad that dominated Italian football was flying back from a friendly in Lisbon against Benfica when the plane crashed into the Superga basilica in the hills around Turin.
The entire team was wiped out at 17.05 on May 4 1949 amid thick fog and rain.
Il Grande Torino won five consecutive Scudetto titles and formed the majority of the Italy squad at that time.
Every year on May 4 there is a service at the Superga basilica to commemorate the disaster.
