Luca Toni is trying to think ‘as little as possible’ about the World Cup, despite an unbelievable goalscoring season for Verona.
The veteran striker has netted 19 times in the League for the Gialloblu this term, but indications are that Cesare Prandelli will not pick him for the tournament in Brazil this summer.
“This is the year where we’re all hoping we can make it,” he told MP Magazine.
“I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I want to go. My greatest wish is to be recalled to the national team.
“Unfortunately, it seems that being the second best striker in Italy is not enough. I’m trying to think about it as little as possible though.
“Having said that, it would be great to go to Brazil. I’m trying to send a message to Prandelli [with my goals].
“Every goal I score is for Verona, myself and the national team. I have booked a holiday for the summer, but I’m happy to cancel!”
The towering forward then commented on his future.
“We are fighting for a place in Europe, we have smashed the record for points and goals scored in Serie A for a promoted team.
“I feel like I have found myself here. I would love to stay.”
