England captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that his side do not fear Italy ahead of their World Cup opener.

The Three Lions play the Azzurri in their first match of the tournament in Manaus on June 14.

But the Liverpool midfielder has claimed that his men are doing everything that can to prepare in the right way for that clash.

“Now it starts to get serious,” he told reporters at their Portuguese training camp today.

“We’re here but we can’t wait to start this World Cup adventure. This, right now, is the most important part – the preparation.

“It’s crucial that we get in shape for the first match against Italy, which is vitally important.

“We have to concentrate on giving our all in the three friendlies before we get to Brazil, and fix the things that maybe aren’t perfect.

“But there’s no better game to start with than Italy. They have to be considered one of the favourites because of their experience, but we don’t fear them.”

Italy will be in London on Saturday May 31 to play the Republic of Ireland at Craven Cottage in their first warm-up game ahead of the World Cup.
