Cesare Maldini says that Italy ‘have good prospects’ heading out to the World Cup, but that Brazil remain outright favourites.

The Azzurri are midway through a second week of training at Coverciano, ahead of warm-up fixtures with the Republic of Ireland on Saturday in London and with Luxembourg next Wednesday in Perugia.

With a final 23 then due to fly out to Brazil, one of the Nazionale’s former CTs has reflected on their chances.

With a final 23 then due to fly out to Brazil, one of the Nazionale’s former CTs has reflected on their chances.

“Italy have good prospects and can have a good tournament,” Maldini has told radio program ‘Pentiti Baggio’ this week.

“The teams in the group, England aside, are within reach and Prandelli has plenty of time to choose the players who are in best shape.

“The favourite? When you predict the winner of the World Cup, there are always the South American teams to consider, and in this case it is Brazil.”
