Riccardo Montolivo will undergo surgery tomorrow on the broken tibia he sustained last night against Ireland, it has been confirmed.

The 29-year-old had to be stretchered off during Italy’s friendly against Martin O’Neill’s team after Alex Pearce’s eighth minute challenge at Craven Cottage.

Following a lengthy period of treatment on the pitch, the Azzurri midfielder was rushed to hospital, with tests later confirming fears that the Milan player had fractured the bone in his leg.

As a result, Montolivo will miss this summer’s World Cup and reports this morning suggest he may even be ruled out of the start of the new Serie A season.

He has now left Cesare Prandelli’s team and been transferred back to Milan, where he will await the operation on Monday.
