Italy’s Group D opponents Costa Rica have started their World Cup warm-up schedule with defeat to Japan in the USA.
Jorge Luis Pinto’s side took the lead in their friendly with Alberto Zaccheroni’s team thanks to Bryan Ruiz just past the half-hour mark [pictured].
However, from the hour mark the Samurai Blue proved too strong, equalising through Yasuhito Endo before then taking the lead with Shinji Kagawa’s effort 20 minutes later and capping a 3-1 result with Yoichiro Kakitani’s stoppage time finish.
Costa Rica will open their World Cup campaign in Group D on June 14 against Uruguay, before facing Italy six days later and then closing out against England on June 24.
