Lorenzo Insigne has promised to represent the city of Naples as a whole at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Napoli forward has been named as part of Cesare Prandelli’s Italy squad for the tournament and says it is a dream come true to be involved.
Speaking to the Partenopei’s official website, the 22-year-old also revealed the excitement he felt in the immediate aftermath of learning he had made Prandelli’s final 23-man selection.
“The World Cup is a dream come true,” Insigne said. “When I wear the national team’s shirt I will take the blue of Napoli with me too.
“I will give my all, I am excited but very determined too. I always believed in and hoped for this call-up.
“My dream as a child was to play in the blue of Napoli, the team of my heart.
“Now, my other dream of playing for the national team at the World Cup has also come true. I am really happy.
“I felt a great joy [when I found out]. I called home straight away and my family and I talked excitedly on the phone. They were moments that I will never forget.”
Insigne was then asked about a congratulatory tweet written to him by Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis.
“Yes, I’ve read it. He expressed his wish that I take the Neapolitan joy to the World Cup and dance on the pitch for the people of Naples.
“It was a very nice message. In Brazil, I will look to give joy to the President and to the Napoli fans.”
