Fiorentina captain Manuel Pasqual is targeting a place in the Champions League for the Viola next season.

Vincenzo Montella side were decimated by injuries during the second half of last term, a major factor in their bid for qualification to Europe’s premier club competition falling away.

However, the defender believes that with strikers Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi both back to full fitness in time for the start of the new campaign, his team can achieve their objective.

“Targets? With Fiorentina we will start the new season better than the way in which we finished the last one,” Pasqual told Sky Sport this afternoon.

“We will have Rossi and Gomez who will have recovered.

“The target is to get more points and to finish in the top three places in the League.”

The 32-year-old also spoke of his disappointment at having not been included in Italy’s 23-man World Cup squad.

He did feature in Cesare Prandelli’s 30-man pre-tournament party, but was one of the players who did not survive the Azzurri tactician’s final cull.

“I’m sorry not to be there. During the first days of the training camp I was hoping to be included, but then Prandelli told me he was going for other players.”
