Holland Coach Louis Van Gaal insists his team’s famous win over Spain will mean nothing if they don’t beat Australia.

The experienced tactician presided over a scintillating performance from his side, with Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben in particular starring in a sensational 5-1 win over the defending world champions.

“I did not expect that it would go like that,” admitted Van Gaal to media following the Group B match in Salvador.

“After the final whistle we had a very happy feeling. It could have been even more.

“This is a nice start, but we have nothing. If we do not beat Australia we have made no progress, but we obviously have a platform.”

Van Gaal also expressed his pleasure that Van Persie chose to celebrate scoring by joining him in the dugout.

“It’s great that he came to me, that is a sign of appreciation. The appreciation is mutual.”
