The Azzurri need at least a draw to progress in the World Cup, whereas La Celeste can only qualify with a victory on Tuesday.

“I was convinced we would go forward together, but instead now we have a play-off,” Gargano told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I was convinced we would go forward together, but instead now we have a play-off,” Gargano told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We won’t leave the initiative to Andrea Pirlo and his teammates. We will focus on the counter-attack, as this is a tactical idea that has always worked.

“Don’t forget that Marcello Lippi’s Italy lifted the World Cup trophy in 2006 thanks to an unbeatable defence and their counters.

“Cesare Prandelli’s side is more entertaining to watch, but in football at the end of the day the only thing that counts is victory.”
