Costa Rica topped Group D with a goalless draw, as England went out with a point to their name.

The Three Lions were already eliminated, so Roy Hodgson completely revamped his line-up with Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw among those getting a run-out. Costa Rica had qualified for the Last 16 of the World Cup, but needed at least a point to be sure of winning Group D.

Jack Wilshere set up Daniel Sturridge for an effort that whistled just wide, but Celso Borges saw his swerving free kick fingertipped on to the crossbar by Ben Foster.

England had penalty appeals for a challenge on Sturridge, but the same player also turned a free header off target from a corner.

In the second half Luke Shaw intercepted a clearance, but Sturridge’s first touch let him down and Keylor Navas was able to sprint off the line to clear.

Christian Bolanos came off the bench and almost immediately forced a save out of Foster, while Sturridge wasted a great opportunity by turning wide after a give-and-go with Wilshere.
