FIFA have revealed that disciplinary proceedings against Luis Suarez have been opened after his bite on Giorgio Chiellini.

The Celestes striker appeared to bite down on the Italy defender’s shoulder during their 1-0 win over the Azzurri on Tuesday.

The Mexican referee did not see the incident, so the world’s governing body have confirmed that they can take retrospective action against the Liverpool goalscorer.

“FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player Luis Suarez of Uruguay,” a statement read.

“We are awaiting the official match reports and will gather all the necessary elements in order to evaluate the matter.”

Britain's FIFA Vice-President and head of FIFA's referees committee, Jim Boyce, also expressed his condemnation of Suarez.

“I have watched the incident several times on television,” he told reporters.

“There is no doubt Luis Suarez is a fantastic footballer but, once again, his actions have left him open to severe criticism.

“FIFA must investigate the incident seriously and take whatever disciplinary action deemed necessary.”

Meanwhile, Michel D'Hooghe, a Belgian member of the FIFA Executive Committee, admitted to the Press that it was “a really a serious case for our disciplinary commission.”
