‘We won’t name Italy’s CT today’

Prospective new FIGC chief Carlo Tavecchio says he wants to dissuade Giancarlo Abete from resigning, and doubts Italy’s new CT will be decided upon today.

The Presidents of the various components of Italian football are meeting with Abete [pictured, left] today at the Italian Football Federation headquarters, ahead of the Federal Council meeting, to discuss among other things Abete and Cesare Prandelli’s respective resignations handed in at the end of Italy’s short-lived World Cup campaign.

Whilst seen as the leading candidate to replace the former and already believed to have a strategy in place to replace the latter, the current President of the National Amateur League has made clear his initial motivations.

“There is this strange logic that one must approach an administration in competition,” Tavecchio has told reporters outside the FIGC’s headquarters today.

“The fact remains that President Abete has given so much to the Federation.

“Now I want to hear from the mouth of Abete that his resignation is truly irrevocable. I will personally try to persuade him to withdraw from this position.

“Today, I can say for sure that we will establish the date of the meeting and with the schedule it will be no later than August 11.

“I do not think that the Coach will be named today - it makes no sense, because it will be for the Federation Council to decide in August.”
