Thiago Silva defended Brazil’s “emotional” approach to the World Cup, citing Ayrton Senna and Oscar Schmidt.

The Seleçao were criticised for weeping in the Round of 16 victory over Chile on penalties, but the captain stood up for the team after they beat Colombia 2-1.

“We experience all possible emotions and don’t wait to start the game before we feel them,” Thiago Silva told reporters.

“People talk about emotion, but if you do not feel emotion, then you cannot give your best on the field.

“Both Ayrton Senna and Oscar Schmidt gave themselves body and soul, so they were not afraid to cry. I give myself body and soul to the team.”

Senna was a legendary Formula 1 driver, while fellow Brazilian Schmidt broke records in basketball.

However, Thiago Silva won’t be able to experience the semi-final against Germany, as he will be suspended.

“The card takes me out of the game, but I know that Dante and Henrique are in good condition and able to cover my absence.

“It was a silly card, as the goalkeeper threw the ball in front of me and I went for it.”
