The Barcelona striker’s World Cup is over after he suffered a fractured third lumbar vertebra during a 2-1 quarter-final victory over Colombia last night.

Neymar will have his back immobilised during the recovery process, which is expected to last four to six weeks in total.

There were emotional scenes at the Rio de Janeiro airport where the squad was leaving for its Teresopolis training camp, as teammates hugged him in his wheelchair.

Due to the fracture, Neymar had to make that journey in an ambulance rather than the team bus.

It’s also reported the Brazilian Federation (CBF) will make a formal protest to FIFA today seeking punishment for Zuniga.

The Colombia full-back caused the injury with a knee in the back, but did not receive a booking during the game.

The CBF hope that Zuniga will be punished using video evidence, just as Luis Suarez was for his bite on Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s game with Italy.

However, while Suarez’s bite was with clear intent to harm, Zuniga argues the knee was an accident and just part of a normal challenge.
