They conceded only two goals in six games and were eliminated in a penalty shoot-out with the Netherlands at the quarter-final stage.

“We are proud of what we have achieved,” an emotional Pinto told reporters after the game.

“We leave the tournament unbeaten and with our heads held high. It can happen to make mistakes in a shoot-out and we did all we could against great players.

“It’s true we defended well and were also a little fortunate, but we had faith in ourselves.”

The only other CONCACAF side to avoid defeat in a World Cup were hosts Mexico in 1986.

“There can be a bright future ahead, but we need to analyse and understand the situation calmly.”

Los Ticos were able to beat Italy and Uruguay, holding England to a draw with their second-string side and getting past Greece on penalties.
