Stefano Tacconi claims he should’ve followed Tim Krul’s example and come off the bench for Italy’s 1990 World Cup shoot-out.

Krul came on as a substitute during the final minute of extra time and was the hero in Holland’s quarter-final victory over Costa Rica last night.

“It takes courage for a Coach to make a change like that,” Tacconi told AdnKronos.

“Louis Van Gaal certainly didn’t just invent that decision on the spot, as it was clearly agreed with Krul.

“He was right and did well to make the change. Azeglio Vicini should’ve done the same in 1990.”

Tacconi was on the Italy bench in the 1990 World Cup semi-final, which Argentina won on penalties.

Walter Zenga was in goal and unable to stop any of the spot-kicks.
