Germany captain Philipp Lahm insisted “we had the best team in the tournament” after lifting the World Cup.
They needed extra time to beat Argentina in Rio de Janeiro, but the 1-0 result secured Germany’s fourth trophy – the first since 1990.
“We had the best team in the tournament,” Lahm assured reporters after the game.
“It’s unbelievable what we achieved today. Over 120 minutes we worked together as a team. It doesn’t matter if you have the best individual players, as you need to have the best team unit.
“We made significant progress in the tournament again and again, did not let any setbacks get us down and stuck to our path.
“In the end, we stand as world champions. It’s an incredible feeling. The team remained calm and patient, knowing we’d get our chance.
