Fiorentina have become the first Serie A club to remove their support for race row candidate Carlo Tavecchio.

He had the backing of all but two top flight teams – Juventus and Roma – but the controversy over his racist comments has brought calls for him to step down.

“ACF Fiorentina, standing firm with their ethical and civil values, in the light of recent statements from Mr Tavecchio consider his candidacy as President of the FIGC is no longer sustainable," President Mario Cognini told news agency ANSA.

The other candidate is Demetrio Albertini, the Vice-President of the Federation.

Lazio President Claudio Lotito reaffirmed his support for Tavecchio.

“We say that any old Opti Pobà can come here, before he was eating bananas, now he’s playing in the Lazio first XI,” said Tavecchio on Friday.
