Italy Under-21 Coach Gigi Di Biagio admits they “did not play well” after a 2-1 friendly defeat to Romania.

“We did not play well. We were stretched out on the field and unable to press our opponents,” Di Biagio told reporters.

“When that is the case, everything becomes more difficult. Our legs are a little heavy, as we did well in the opening 10 minutes, but that’s not enough.”

It is not a reassuring result ahead of crucial European Championship qualifiers against Serbia and Cyprus.

“Over the next few days we will have to evaluate what went wrong. The lads know how important September’s games are and we are working towards that.”
