The Vesuviani exited this year’s UEFA competition at the Play-off round after an aggregate 4-2 defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

The Corriere della Sera are running the line that Benitez is holding responsibility of the disappointment on an indifferent transfer market campaign, that has seen the club linked with a number of targets in midfield, but so far fail to bring in anyone beyond Jonathan de Guzman.

It is reported that Benitez’s dissatisfaction has caused tension with President De Laurentiis this week, in the wake of the team’s Champions League exit.

Meanwhile, the Corriere della Sera and Il Mattino report that Gonzalo Higuain is far from happy following the elimination.

The former Real Madrid man was linked with an exit from the club earlier this summer and, whilst he is believed willing to stay at the San Paolo, this term is described now as ‘key’ to determining his future at the club.
