Andriy Shevchenko says Clarence Seedorf didn’t fail at Milan, he hopes Pippo Inzaghi does well, and that Mario Balotelli isn’t yet lost.

The Rossoneri are into a new season under Coach Inzaghi, following a difficult six month spell with Seedorf in charge.

For one former teammate of both, however, the Dutchman’s struggles cannot be counted as a failure.

“He collected so many points during the second round of the season, and the situation was not easy,” Shevchenko has told the Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“Clarence took the risk, as is right in a new profession – he is now a step forward, he has gained experiences that cannot be earned through training kids.

“The defeats are part of any job and should be placed in account, but I would not talk about failures.”

The former No 7 at San Siro thinks Inzaghi could be just right for Milan.

“I hope that he can arrive at the end of the season in the best way. He has started well and I have felt the enthusiasm of San Siro.

“Pippo as a player had it all, he has the knowledge to lead a team. Then, win or lose is a question that depends on much, but hopefully he will have a wonderful career on the bench.”

Shevchenko, who took part in the Match for Peace in Rome on Monday night, and scored, also reflected on Mario Balotelli’s departure from Milan.

“If he was not happy and Milan weren’t either, it was right to separate. But I saw Mario at the European Championships two years ago in Ukraine and Poland – he was a fantastic player and I refuse to believe that this has been lost along the way.

“Balotelli deserves another chance and Liverpool will give it to him. They are a great team, he can aspire to also win the Champions League, it’s up to him to overcome the difficulties and take back control of his destiny.”

On the subject of Europe, Shevchenko conceded Serie A is lagging behind the competition nowadays.

“Italian football has lost its quality as it no longer has the resources to buy champions in their moment of glory.

“In the end it all comes down to this – Milan, Inter or even Juve cannot compete with the rich in football. When I arrived, it was different.

“I think Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, PSG, in general the British, German and Spanish clubs are favourites, but Juve has the class that you need to challenge them and Roma have enthusiasm.”
