Costa Rica international Giancarlo ‘Pipo’ Gonzalez “couldn’t say no” to Palermo after Columbus Crew.

The Costa Rica international impressed at the World Cup and earned a move to Italy, becoming the most expensive defender in the history of the MLS.

“I couldn’t say no to Palermo,” said Gonzalez after signing a four-year contract.

“It is an important opportunity for me. I wanted to prove at the World Cup that I could get back to being a protagonist in Europe.

“Now my objective is to get the most out of this experience, because I have joined a great club.

“First of all we want to secure safety in Serie A, then earn our space at this level. It is an honour for me to play in Italy and at this club.”
