Gaetano D’Agostino signed for Fidelis Andria today, but “had the ticket” for Real Madrid and Juventus in 2009.

The former Udinese” data-scaytid=”6″>Udinese midfielder was at the centre of a bitter bidding war between Juventus and Real Madrid only five years ago, but today began a new chapter of his career in Serie D.

“This week I received many calls and interesting proposals, but they always stretched on and I got the feeling clubs didn’t want to really finalise talks,” 32-year-old D’Agostino told gianlucadimarzio.com.

“With Fidelis Andria, it was all done in one day. I was won over by their passion. I have an incredible desire to play football, as I miss the field and am very motivated.”

It’s remarkable to think only five years ago D’Agostino was the hottest ticket on the European transfer market.

“In the summer of 2009 I was meant to go to Juventus, as everything had already been sorted out. I had spoken to Ciro Ferrara and there was great enthusiasm. Then after three months of to and fro, the whole thing collapsed.

“As for Real Madrid, my former lawyer still has the airplane ticket to Madrid. Negotiations were very, very serious.

“In football talks are performed by directors and Presidents, so you’d need to ask them what happened.”

He eventually left Udinese for Fiorentina” data-scaytid=”24″>Fiorentina in July 2010, but his career petered out with spells at Siena and Pescara.

D’Agostino was a free agent this summer, because Siena went into liquidation.

“It was a great disappointment, of course, and I’ll always have fond memories of the fantastic people at Siena.

“I personally thank God that I have been given another opportunity and now I’m ready to give Andria everything.”
