Roma stewards are furious, but CSKA Moscow insist they won’t be punished after crowd trouble in the Champions League.

The incidents occurred before and during last night’s 5-1 home win at the Stadio Olimpico.

There were reports of two injured CSKA fans – one with a minor stab wound, the other hit in the head by a bottle – after the Russian supporters broke through a security barrier.

During the second half the travelling fans attacked stewards and threw lit fireworks into the Roma section, forcing the intervention of riot police.

“We were beaten up, all for being paid €37 per game,” complained a Stadio Olimpico steward to the ANSA news agency.

In all 13 stewards needed medical treatment for injuries and one police officer was left with a fractured jaw.

There were five Russian fans arrested inside the Stadio Olimpico.

CSKA Moscow supporters are not new to incidents of hooliganism and racism, but their Honorary President Viaceslav Koloskov is confident there will be no UEFA action.

“There is no serious punishment due for CSKA because we were not responsible for organising the game and therefore cannot answer to security problems.

“Why did they allow Russian fans to bring fireworks into the stadium if they were guaranteeing security?”

Roma also have reason for concern, as their fans also have a history of incidents in European games, earning this venue the nickname ‘Stab City.’
