Italy Coach Antonio Conte has thrown his backing behind Rafael Benitez and Napoli despite a poor start to the season.

The Partenopei have lost two of their opening three Serie A games, as well as being knocked out of the Champions League by Athletic Bilbao, but Conte believes their slump is only temporary.

“Napoli are suffering after the disappointment in the Champions League. There is disappointment for the fans, and also for the players,” Conte has considered on Il Processo del Lunedi.

“It’s hard, because after working for a year to qualify [for the Champions League], you’re out after two games.

“However, there’s no use crying over spilt milk and missed opportunities. They have a great team, and a great Coach.

“Benitez? His record speaks for itself, he’s a winner. He won a trophy in his first year, and I hope for Napoli and for Serie A that they get back to their best.”
