Milan CEO Barbara Berlusconi confirmed “San Siro isn’t enough anymore” and her club wants to build a new stadium.

The plans have already been in the works for some time and this week she met with Inter President Erick Thohir to discuss the future of the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

“San Siro is a marvellous stadium, where the history and the apex of Milan and Inter was reached, but today it isn’t enough anymore,” Berlusconi told RaiUno.

“Stadiums have to provide different services and infrastructure to be open seven days a week, not just on match day,

“Now in Italy there are so many difficulties. There’s little economic support from the State, the region or the council…

“The biggest problem with Italian football is how argumentative it is. Everyone should be worried about how to promote it in Europe and the world, but instead we waste so much time arguing and creating divisions.

“The model to follow is Germany. When in 2000 they were very disappointed by a poor European Championships, they were able to change the governance of their football, the rules, the people, the stadiums, the youth academies and the books. That’s not just at a national level, but all of the clubs.

“I think our problem is a microcosm of what is happening in the country in general, that of a country that does not want to renew itself.

“In football I see the same desire to keep hold of their positions and the determination to stay anchored to their seats prevails over the necessity of renewal.”
