Gian Piero Gasperini insisted Sampdoria’s winning goal in the Genoa Derby “should’ve been disallowed.”

Manolo Gabbiadini whipped a free kick all the way across the face of goal into the far bottom corner, as nobody got a touch but there were several Samp players in offside positions who were arguably interfering with play.

“In my view it is absolutely not the right result,” an angry Gasperini told Sky Sport Italia.

“This goal changed the game, a goal that was clearly affected by offside positions, but we knew that Sampdoria are building their fortunes on free kicks.

“It should’ve been disallowed, especially as in other goals they have received this season were given despite illegal blocks and fouls. They are being exaggeratedly prized for these free kicks.

“We were absolutely not inferior to Sampdoria in anything tonight and I am sure during the campaign we will catch them up in the table.

“We were sharp down the flank with Perotti and Edenilson, a bit less down the other side, but these are difficult games and it’s not easy to maintain that intensity.

“I think if anything we were more intense that Sampdoria and created more dangerous situations. Unfortunately Lestienne sprained his ankle in training yesterday, so we didn’t have him at our disposal, the same for Marchese.

“When playing at this pace and with this intensity, it’s not easy to marry that with quality too. It was a balanced and tough game, but I have nothing to reproach my players for.”
