Alessio Romagnoli has left Italy’s Under-21 camp with a thigh injury, with Daniele Rugani dropping down from the senior squad as replacement.

Romagnoli has been confirmed by the Italian Football Federation as withdrawing from contention for the upcoming Euro 2015 qualification play-off games with Slovakia.

The Roma-owned Sampdoria defender underwent tests this morning on an injury sustained in training yesterday and these showed signs of a strain suffered to his right thigh.

Subsequently, the 19-year-old has been sent home and Empoli defender Daniele Rugani has been named as his replacement.

The defender was training with the senior squad for Euro 2016 qualifiers with Azerbaijan and Malta, but has been confirmed as dropping down to the Under-21s for their coming commitments instead.

The Azzurrini have also lost Stefano Sturaro to injury this week.
