CONI President Giovanni Malagò warned Serie A clubs “knew” Carlo Tavecchio was heading for a ban over racist comments.

The FIGC President was given a six-month ban by UEFA for making racist comments during an improvised speech in July.

“Let’s not be hypocritical here, as everyone knew full well what was going to happen,” noted Malagò, who is President of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).

“Any question on Tavecchio should therefore not be aimed at me, but at those who elected him in an entirely democratic process.

“I had to accept the result and what happened, as I know the rules and the cases when I can intervene. That is not the case this time.

“Is Italian football weakened by UEFA’s decision? I don’t think so, but it is an image problem and it’s a price that everyone in the football world knew would be paid.

“Now we have to work on reforms and continue along the planned path.”

Malagò had considerably kinder words for Roma President James Pallotta, who released a statement urging Giallorossi and Juventus” data-scaytid=”22″>Juventus fans calm the controversy over their Turin match.

“He deserves applause. That was a lesson in style.”
