Lega Serie A President Maurizio Beretta is open to some elements of the new stadium law passed, but not others.

The Italian Government yesterday passed new laws on stadium security, including allowing the use of tasers at grounds, but also that clubs must fund extra policing on match days from tickets sales.

For the League’s President, there are positives and negatives to take from this change.

“I can confirm the appreciation for the content of the security measures, because basically there is agreement between the institutions and components of the sport,” Beretta has told ANSA today.

“These will improve the safety of stadiums and the lives of respectable fans will be better.

“It will be easier to also contrast with those small minorities that with unacceptable behaviour do harm to the world of football.

“Unfortunately, this measure also has added to it the point of withdrawing from the proceeds from the stadium of the club to cover the costs of security and on this we absolutely do not agree.

“I repeat – Italian football, and in particular Serie A, is a very important tax payer and ensures directly and indirectly significant revenue to the Government.

“For some time also they have covered all expenses related to safety in the stadium.”
