Verona striker Luca Toni says he would love to reach the 300-goal landmark, but insists ‘the team remain the priority’.

The 37-year-old is currently on 296 for club and country but has found the net just once in six Serie A appearances this season.

For the striker, who netted 21 for Verona in all competitions last term, it would be disappointing to miss out on a significant landmark.

“The team is always the priority, but this year I'd like to get to 300 goals,” Toni told Tuttosport.

“The team is always the priority, but this year I'd like to get to 300 goals,” Toni told Tuttosport.

“Missing out by four and not reaching this milestone would be grave for me.

“I'm not worried about [scoring just once]. I would be [worried] if I didn’t have the chances to score. Sooner or later, it [the goal rush] starts again.”

Reflecting on Verona’s visit of Milan this weekend, the former Fiorentina and Italy star took the opportunity to praise his club’s board for their shrewd business in the transfer market

“We are level on points [with Milan] thanks to our great start to the season, even though we changed much of our squad during the summer,” Toni added.

“This means that the club is very solid and prepared to capitalise on their players and then replace them with the same type of quality without having any regrets.”
