Morgan De Sanctis apologised to fans, but assured Roma “are stronger than we seemed” in a 7-1 defeat to Bayern Munich.

The veteran goalkeeper had to pick the ball out of his net five times in the first half alone, seven overall, in a dismal Champions League night at the Stadio Olimpico.

“The only positive aspect of the evening is the attitude of our fans,” De Sanctis told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was an uphill struggle almost from the start, but the fans stood by us and continued to cheer us on. We thank them for this and will try to pay them back throughout the rest of the season.

“To explain the defeat we have to put together our errors with Bayern’s credit, as they are one of the top four teams in the competition.

“We should’ve done it differently, but we didn’t manage to play our game. We have to take responsibility because you can lose, but not with these proportions.

“We are convinced that we are stronger than we seemed tonight.”
