The defender’s header that fell into the path of goalscorer Jose Callejon on Sunday was mistake was the latest of a series of costly blunders in the Serbian defender’s difficult start to life in Serie A.

Some have been attributed to the tactics in place at Inter, but Vidic has denied any of that, in facing the media today.

“Obviously, I always try to train and adapt as much as I can, but it’s not me who should evaluate if the system is affecting or not my performances,” he told reporters during his Press conference ahead of Inter’s Europa League clash with Saint Etienne.

“All I can say is that I just want to train and improve every day. Physically, at the moment, I feel very well and that’s the most important thing.”

Vidic was asked when he expected to have settled in at the club.

“I think you’ll see the best Vidic when Inter will improve,” the former Manchester United defender replied.

“Then I’ll improve too. I really hope to be part of this process.

“There’s always people evaluating my performances, and I accept that. But I think that at the moment I can only say that I’m doing my best.”

The 33-year-old  is committed to results in the long-term.

“In the end this League is not a sprint but a marathon so there’s still a long way in front of us. Anything can happen still.

“Against Napoli we conceded and equalised twice and I think it was right to meet that result with happiness.

“But in the first half we dominated the game, creating many chances.

“There were many positives to take from the game, and it’s true that the spirit within the group is high.

“Obviously, as the manager said, we can still improve under many points of view, but there are also many positives.”

Vidic was talking alongside Walter Mazzarri, who also took time to defend the centre-back from criticism.
