Milan full-back Ignazio Abate has revealed he was close to joining Roma before Leonardo’s tenure on the Rossoneri bench.

Abate has been at San Siro since 1999, having graduated from the club’s youth system, but had spent time on loan with the likes of Empoli, Piacenza and Torino.

Frustrated at not being given a chance with the Diavolo, the 27-year-old has revealed he almost moved to Roma – before a move under his then Brazilian Coach from midfield to right-back.

“Leonardo was crucial,” Abate has told the Gazzetta dello Sport today.

“That year [2009], I thought of just packing-up and leaving. I was wanted by Roma.

“Then Leonardo put me in at full-back. He changed the mentality of the club a little bit, focusing on young players.”

The Italy international also revealed his frustration at his lack of game time under Clarence Seedorf last season, lamenting that his spell on the sidelines could have cost him his place at the World Cup.

“I never asked [Seedorf] for an explanation as to why I was excluded, and I’ve always said things face-to-face.

“All I expect is respect and loyalty.

“I suffered in those months, I risked not going to the World Cup. It was an unfortunate chapter for me and for Milan.

“I’m pleased though that Seedorf said that I always acted like a professional.”

Abate won the Scudetto in 2011 under Massimiliano Allegri, and he considers the current Juventus Coach as a friend.

“At the start under Allegri I wasn’t playing, but after [a 2-2 draw with] Real Madrid I was no longer left out.

“My relationship with him is one of friendship. As a person he’s loyal, sincere and true.”
