“To begin with I want to say I was pleased that President Moratti understood I did not intend to show a lack of respect,” noted the Coach following the Honorary President’s sudden resignation.

It had been reported that patron Erick Thohir’s refusal to sack Mazzarri was part of the reasoning behind Moratti’s exit.

“If I remember rightly, there were also delicate moments last season, but I always said to focus on only the next match. All my energy is spent on getting the players at their best for the next game. The important thing is to focus on the field. Club matters are extraneous.”

The tension is rising at Inter after one point from three Serie A games and a disappointing goalless draw with Saint-Etienne in the Europa League on Thursday.

“Unfortunately we did not win, but I believe we are on the right track. Difficult moments can be overcome along with our fans.

“Such an important club with big expectations is bound to have a lot of pressure on the players. A Coach in these situations has to protect his squad, because they are the ones stepping on to the pitch and have to focus on winning. I have to isolate some of them who aren’t accustomed to this pressure.

“I already explained our poor form is down to fitness issues, as we are second to the ball and not sharp when picking the final pass. I saw against Napoli we played almost the ideal football, as it was aggressive, quick and everyone was focused on winning back the ball.

“We have seven players out injured and that is an undeniable fact. We also started the season earlier due to the Europa League preliminary round. We just need to get through this moment as well as possible.

“Of course we are not happy after losing to Cagliari and Fiorentina, but the renewal process can have some bumps in the road. Football is not an exact science. If everyone works in the same direction, we can soon get back to being competitive.

“Is my time running out? No, mine starts tomorrow,” insisted Mazzarri. “We’re only a few rounds in and the process can be speeded up with points. We’ll certainly try.

“Cesena are a team to be respected, as we’ve seen their positive results on home turf. We must do what we can and build our own destiny.”

With the current run of results, can Inter realistically still target third place in Serie A?

“It’s natural we need a change of form to get more points and everyone knows that. We have to think about Cesena first. I’ve always taken that approach.”
