Pippo Inzaghi sees tomorrow night’s Milan-Fiorentina as potentially decisive in “the hunt for third place.”

It kicks off at San Siro on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“It’s going to be complicated tomorrow,” said Inzaghi in his Press conference.

“Fiorentina are one of the best teams in Serie A and play great football. This is why they tend to do so well in Europe.

“When they have a full squad at their disposal, the Viola can compete at the same level as Juventus and Roma. We’ve studied everything and hope to be well prepared. We know Fiorentina’s strengths are pace and possession with a top quality midfield.

“However, tomorrow I want us to get back to winning at San Siro and we need our fans for a passionate atmosphere.

“I thank Vincenzo Montella for his kind words. He’s doing very well, has great ideas and I wish him all the best. Of course, I hope he does well from Monday onwards…

“He’s already won three consecutive games at San Siro, so he can’t keep winning in our stadium!”

Milan climbed into fourth place in Serie A thanks to their 3-1 victory at Verona, so this is a head-to-head for position with Fiorentina.

“We had our best performance of the season against Verona and cannot afford to take a step backwards. The fact we are five points clear of Fiorentina at this stage is already important, as they are direct rivals for our targets. If they don’t win on Sunday, the hunt for third place could get very complicated for them.

“I know the football world well and the dangers that lie in there. We must keep our feet on the ground and every day I tell my players we can’t relax, even when 3-0 up. We are a team who need to find our confidence and positive results help, but I must also protect the squad from too much praise. We are Milan and we’ve achieved nothing yet.”

Jeremy Menez is available after an injury, but Inzaghi admits the Frenchman is not in great shape.

“I spoke to Jeremy. He was a little timorous at Verona after his injury, but I am relaxed about his progress. I haven’t chosen my starting XI yet and that is good for a Coach, as it means everything is training well.

“I need to find the best starters for this game and the alternatives who can prove decisive off the bench. I must decide between Menez, El Shaarawy and Torres. It’s a complicated issue, but one every Coach would like to have.

“Fernando Torres can improve, like all of Milan, but I am happy with his performance. As a Coach I look not only at goals, but also at his attitude and work ethic. He just needs to find his sharpness.

“Cristian Zapata used because he’s our quickest centre-back? I am thinking about that. I have to focus on countering our opponents, but above all on doing what’s best for Milan, as we have to impose our style on the game, especially at San Siro.”

Inzaghi also confessed he has to make “a difficult choice” between Diego Lopez and Christian Abbiati in goal, though “any decision I make could be right or wrong.”
