Vincenzo Montella felt Fiorentina “could’ve won” against Milan with more sharpness and confidence.

Nigel de Jong scored the opener and Josip Ilicic equalised in the 1-1 draw at San Siro.

“You could tell our most important strikers were missing and that has been forcing us to change our style,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I thought Fiorentina had a great performance and could’ve won after the equaliser, but we were a little tired and made some bad choices.

“We’ve played better, that’s for sure, but it was a very tactical game and Milan did well to block our passing channels. We were too slow in the first half, but improved after the break.

“The team showed itself to be solid and united, especially after going behind. We got ourselves back into it, but lacked sharpness and that prompted us to make some mistakes. If we’d had more options in certain areas of the field, we could’ve won here.

“The important thing is that the team creates chances, then I’m not sure how we can improve our finishing. I think so much of it has to do with belief more than quality.”

Borja Valero had been dropped for several games, but was restored to the heart of the Fiorentina midfield.

“He can certainly do better, but he really is improving above all in terms of consistency. I think it’s different for him playing alongside someone like Pizarro rather than Aquilani.”

Fiorentina have a 100 per cent record in the Europa League, beating PAOK 1-0 on Thursday evening.

“We care a great deal about that competition and are close to qualifying for the knockouts, but from February it’ll get very tough indeed and the Champions League teams drop in. I hope we won’t have to make a choice on what to focus on between the Europa League and Serie A.”
